Milling potential score and chalkiness

Milling potential score is a measure of the milling yield.  This test is normally conducted for early generation breeders’ materials. Unpolished rice grains are visually inspected and scored based on the degree of breakage.


Chalkiness is an attribute that can be closely related with milling potential score.  It is associated with the amount of opaque white discoloration of the endosperm, which reduces the value of head rice kernels and decreases the ratio of head to broken rice produced during the milling process. 


Note: For milling potential score determination, the sample weight required is at least 10 g of brown rice placed in a paper bag. In order to keep the integrity of the customers' samples, senders are requested to place them in secured plastic boxes.
